iPad Air (M2, 2024) Review

The Apple iPad Air has always been a great option for those looking for more advanced features than the basic iPad but who would prefer not to pay increasingly high prices for the latest iPad Pro models. That motivation makes the 2024 update even more appealing.

Form Factors: You can stick with the 11″ or go for a brand new 13″. The larger sized iPads are known to be a little less portable and more unwieldy to handle. But if you’re an artist, or a comic book reader, or a movie watcher, then the extra screen space could be exactly what you’re looking for. I’m reviewing the smaller size and find it still works well with two side-by-side apps (like a Safari browser and the Notes app) and doesn’t get tiring to hold for longer sessions. The iPad Air can be used as a second monitor for a Mac desktop and even at 11″ it works a reference screen or for note taking while the main monitor plays full screen. The color choices aren’t really worth discussing as they are so desaturated and will most often be hidden inside a cover.

M2 Processor: For many years iPads have felt more-than powerful enough for the tasks most people expect of them. But with the upcoming Apple AI in iOS 18 the extra power in the M2 might be more useful than before.

Apple Pencil Pro: The new iPad Air is compatible with the brand new Apple Pencil Pro, so it will appeal to artists, doodlers and hand-writers. The Apple Pencil Pro is an add-on purchase and honestly isn’t necessary, unless you are one of those people I mentioned.

Conclusion: Is the iPad Air (M2, 2024) worth buying or upgrading to? Of course it very much depends on your needs and usage, but the iPad is still the most well rounded and long-lasting tablet on the market; and that comes at a price. But if you are in the Apple ecosystem and want a lightweight but powerful tablet experience, without the cost of the iPad Pro, then the iPad Air could be just what you’re looking for.
